For over 35 years, we are proud to provide our Inclusive Preschool Program and help spread the rewards of inclusion.

WHO WE ARE

The Adaptive Learning Center (ALC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that maximizes the potential of young children with disabilities, and creates awareness and acceptance between non-disabled people  and people with disabilities.

ALC achieves this through:

• An early intervention program that integrates education in warm, nurturing, inclusive preschools

• Support services that help family members understand and cope with issues related to raising a child with special needs.

• Education and consultation to help communities build resources which foster acceptance and support of people with differences and empower them to become active, contributing citizens

WHAT WE DO

ALC is a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization which provides therapy and education for infants and young children with, or at risk for, developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Fragile X.  ALC provides an inclusive preschool program, outpatient speech therapy, observations, parent support, and consultation to preschool programs seeking to include children with developmental disabilities.

ALC services also meet a great need in our community by making child care more accessible to children with developmental disabilities. Child care for these children is critical because:

• it gives them opportunities for social development with their peers,

• it offers respite to parents from the hard work of raising a child with special needs,

• it allows parents to return to work so that they can afford the extra expenses of equipment, therapy, and care.

The Adaptive Learning Center serves as a model for early childhood programs around Georgia that wish to serve children with developmental disabilities. The work of the Adaptive Learning Center’s founder, Susan Tauber, has been recognized with awards from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Tommy Nobis Center, and Turner Broadcasting.

Our Mission Statement

The Adaptive Learning Center maximizes the potential of young children with disabilities, and creates awareness and acceptance between non-disabled people and people with disabilities.  ALC achieves this through:

• An Inclusive Preschool Program that provides special education facilitator support for children with disabilities so they can attend regular, accredited preschools with individualized Therapy Education Plans.

• Training for early childhood educators on inclusion strategies and red flags for child development.

• Support services that help family members understand and cope with issues related to raising a child with special needs.

• An Observation, Screening, and Referral Program to link community resources with families in need, and to help communities build resources that foster acceptance and support of people with differences.

The Adaptive Learning Center was founded in 1982 by pediatric occupational therapist Susan K. Tauber and has served more than 10,000 children with disabilities, their families, and their teachers.
